I just discovered this group and am really glad to find you. I am just
getting serious again about blues harp after many years just playing
in the car with myself. I started playing at a workshop in 1966 with
Paul Butterfield, been on and off since - got pointers along the way
from some great harp players (Charlie Musclewhite, drunk onenight in
one of his down periods in a San Francisco bar), Huey Lewis (one of
the great hearp players I've ever heard, but not famous for it), Sugar
Blue - but I guess just time and osmosis did the rest. But for the
last few years, after moving to Florida, things have been slow,
especially since there is almost no blues scene here. But I jammed
with a small band othat includes some blues withtheir other tunes, we
clicked and now I am part of the band! Almost forgot how much fun it
is - not counting all the $$$ I just spent to upgrade my equipment and
add a few additional Lee Oskars. I'm playing through a Shure Green
Bullet I bought myself around 1970-something, but am interested in
experimenting with different mics. Picked up an Epiphone Valve Junior
amp - heck of a sound for $99...I mic it thru the PA.

I started looking for better, more discrete ways to control volume
while playing (I have always done that by controlling the mic position
and cupping tighter or looser, etc.) So I picked up an Art Tube MP pre
and a SABINE FBX SOLO Feedback Suppressor on eBay (the GB tends to
feedback some with the Valve Jr. Anyone have any experience using a
feedback suppressor??? I am hoping it doesn't affect the tone or
something...seemed like a good deal $24 on eBay, retail around $300)?
Finally won a Mike Clements Harmonica Preamp which should arrive soon
- anyone know much about these, almost nothing on the web (apparently
hasn't been made for ten years or so)??? You wear it on your belt. I
thought it would be a good way to control volume, but it has a lot of
other interesting features.

Well, that should be more than enugh introduction for now. Hoping to
get to know you all better - and enjoy reading all of your posts.

RFG, Welcome to the slowest moving harp NG that exists (other than the
Popper fan club)...We progress here at about the speed of a glacier, but
it's mostly good stuff and lots of different points of view. Very cool
about you meeting Butter and even cooler that you found us.... Let us know
if we can help you with anything that makes your return to harp playing any
easier. Sounds like you must be about the same vintage as I am...Nice to
have another old guy standing by. Take it easy and again, welcome.

Hey Zoran!
How's tricks ?

When are we going to hear some more of your fine playing?
The band I play with is busy, so that's good.

Right now I am in New Jersey, working.
Rode my motorcycle here from Chicago, where I live.
That's how I get around. Don't like to fly.

I bring my harps and mics with me, just in case there is a jam some place
where I can sit in.

Need to buy a side car, so I can bring my amp !

Or, my dog....

"Bosco," a flat coated retriever.

This is what he looks like:

Hi Zoran,

I just made this little blues tune:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=685233&songID=5197987

I am currently trying to improve my trills or headshakes, (whatever they're
called). You'll notice there aren't any trills on the recording, (maybe
next time).

My draw bends are getting better. I find the Suzuki Promaster is much
easier to bend with. Unfortunately, there a little on the pricey side for
me, so I took a gamble and ordered a set of 6 Suzuki Bluesmasters in the
hopes that they're of similiar quality. They should be here any day now.

If your son wants to play music, there will be no stopping him!! If he
doesn't have the talent he will end up like me, make a good living as a
programmer and torture his family with bad music. :-)

Remember your son has already been listening to music for some months now!
When my wife was pregnant with our son I used to sing the alphabet song to
her belly every couple of days, (it's a child's song to learn their
letters). I was in the room with my wife when my son was born. When they
told me to come over and say hello to him, he was crying. I started to sing
the alphabet song to him and he stopped crying and opened his eyes!

He's already listening to you.

Wow, what a nice equipment you have. Your playing, well, there (in this song
you make) is good timing, right tone, but much hesitatiton. Relax, take a
breath, relax again, than start playing. On the internet have much harp
instruction.

Practice with scale
'do re mi fa so la ti do',
4-blow, 4-draw, 5-blow, 5-draw, 6-blow, 6-draw, 7-draw, 7-blow,
practice every day one or half an hour, every day, evry day, not once a
week, every day.

Than for practice blow each hole from 1 to 10, than back, than, blow two
times on 1 hole, two times draw on 1 hole, than every hole same like first
hole.

Trills, hmmm, try playing 2 draw, 3 draw, 4 blow, than draw 4 and 5, shake
hand or head from 4 to 5, well 4 to 5, 5 to 4, like brushing your teeth.

Hand vibrato or wah wah effect, take harp in hand beetwen thumb and index
finger, than put other palm under and shake this hand.

I hope you understand my english well enough. You have good approach to play
harp, but wrong lips position, and hesitation, but in play you got
consistency. It's not metter of talent, practice is that what you need.

Your dear son is young, his brain take messages fast, faster than we are.

Patrick don't loose your will to play. I'm old and tired of playing, I make
mistake, didn't practice more than need for some song. Well on the net, on
youtube got many lessons, Jon Gindick, Adam Gussow, this two guys got nice
lessons.

I started play harp 1973, first harp I got 1971, but first blues harp
(Marine Band, and BLues Harp) I had 1973, was playing till the 1983 and than
stooped. Again started 2005. Between 1983 and 2005 I got harps but play
rarelly, for sme occasions. 22 years I didn't practice, that's the problem,
I ask myself why, I'm angry on myself. Don't stop playing, never, cause harp
is the nice nice nice instrument, but really hard to play, isn't easy, but
you can do with practice more than other who don't practice. Sory, no words.

Regards

Be patient Patrick, results come, bee shure, if give energy in work you do.

Many regards from me and my wife Martina and many best wishes to your son,
whom I respect very much. This couple of video of your son playing stayed in
my mind forewer. Haven't good word for this what I want to tell you, but
hope can understand me.

If you have more question, Silk and John Agosta got experience with harp
playing, ask him for something.

Welcome RFG. I'm in Florida as well. (Broward County) Welcome to the
post. I rarely post but I thought I'd at least welcome you. This is
a great site to get info and respond. On another note I've heard of
others using anti feedback gear, specifically the Kinder Anti-feedback
+. However, they're expensive ($350). Would love to own one of their
amps as the anti-feedback is built in...but I don't have an extra $2k
lying around to purchase one. :-)
