3 chicks, a trampoline and a gallon of Wesson-oil comes to mind... Or,
on a more serious note, how about a Penny Whistle or a Xaphoon?...Also
there's the Juice-Harp, Slide Whistle, and the Kazoo... and what about
playing Electric Ocarina?

No, man, don't use Crisco--that stuff is shortening!
Virgin olive oil is a much better, and safer, choice.

What about a Jew's Harp/Jaw Harp? Has anyone tried those? They look
interesting to me. Also, it's not small, but I'd like to build my own
didjerdo - supposedly you can make a pretty decent one yourself out of
PVC pipe.

At my suggestion, my son just purchased a xaphoon. He was a sax. player
in junior high and high school. He played it for me a week ago. Very
difficult if you were never a wind instrument musician, and the
fingering is totally different then a sax. Allen

Anyone ever hear of the "Buddha Machine"? It's a small microprocessor
type object. Go and read about it. Very interesting little device.
I heard one used on a record by a friend who does experimental stuff.
The thing seems to have a mind of it's own.

Google it. It's interesting. I'd really like to have one of those
and run straight into a board for about a week just to see what I can
get out of it. I would imagine I could cycle it into a beat, or a
meter?.. where I could actually play something less "ambient" and more
melodic. In any case, this thing is extremely interesting and has
been known to cause crowds to almost be speechless whenever it's
inventors, FM3, uses it at the gigs.

Oh and...yeah, there is one portible instrument which is both now
affordable AND small, especially since KORG made one that's just a few
hundred bucks. It now fits in a sachel bag, but in the past was
intially built inside a cabinet. The Theremin.

Do you remember all those cool ass science fiction flicks from the
1950's and early 60's that had that "bendy" electronic, analog wave...
it went, "oooooweeeeeeooooooo!"... kinda thing. You've all heard
Thermin's, probably a million times by now. Well, that instrument got
took pretty seriously by some players, who could control pitch and
volume with their hands so well (and the instruments got more defined
technically), that some precission and execution was made. There is
this one guy, who gigs as "Peter Pringle". The guy looks square as
snack cakes, but he in fact is one of the most talented and inventive
musical minds on this swinging sphere. All there is to it. But
anyway the guy can really play this thing. He has a massive
collection of them. Just totally NUTS. Ah yes, the obsessedly
blessed.

Mr. Pringle, square as he seems, has not one equal peer. None.
Zero. He is the one, the only, the best.

Try this out.

That's Pringle on the theremin doing the piece, "Pavine", written by
composer Faure'. It's a bit shocking. It seems to be from some other
time and place. It's too pretty to be here, around the likes of the
living, all stuck in the blood, smut and ruthlessness of natural life,
murder and sex.

So yeah, you can also google the KORG Theremin, cause that's a small
instrument that seems to be limitless with possibilities. I've lusted
after one of these for a while now. I NEEDS IT.
